IN THE PAPERS

An overview of the stories making the French and international newspaper headlines. From Monday to Friday live at 7.20 am and 9.20 am Paris time.

Latest update : 2012-04-09

Syria - the proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia

Today's international papers are all about the Middle East - cynicism over the Kofi Annan peace plan in Syria, controversy over presidential candidates in Egypt, and a poem causing a diplomatic row between Germany and Israel.

The Independent says it was naive of the West ever to have thought Assad would follow the Kofi Annan peace plan; while Foreign Policy explains the conflict in Syria has in fact become a regional proxy war.

Al-Ahram in Egypt looks at the row over former Mubarak intelligence chief Omar Suleiman standing in elections - while the Egypt Independent says the row over the Muslim Brotherhood's choice of candidate could split the party.

Meanwhile, German Nobel Prize winner Gunter Grass is in trouble over a poem he wrote that upset Israel - forcing Guido Westerwelle to apologise for him in the Bild am Sonntag newspaper - while Gideon Levy in Haaretz says Israel must learn to take criticism better.
