Santorum exits Republican primary

Rick Santorum has suspended his campaign for the US Republican primary. The former senator from Pennsylvania surprised many with his performance, but ultimately the distance between him and front-runner Mitt Romney was too great to bridge. He leaves the path clear for Romney to take on President Barack Obama in November - but the former Massachussets governor will have to fight hard to win over the Republican voters he alienated during his fierce fight against Santorum.
