On Sunday Italy's Enrico Gasparotto won the Amstel Gold race, the Netherlands' biggest one-day cycling event. He beat out favourite Philippe Bilbert, who won the race the previous two years.

REUTERS - Italy’s unheralded Enrico Gasparotto won the Amstel Gold race, the Netherland’s biggest one-day cycling event, on Sunday.

Second behind the Astana rider was Belgian Jelle Vanendert and third was Slovakian Peter Sagan.

Gasparotto and his two closest rivals pulled clear of the 60-strong front pack on the last climb, the Cauberg, and the Italian was the fastest in the three-rider final sprint.

“It’s my biggest win since the 2005 Italian National Championships,” Gasparotto told reporters.
