France cautioned over its economic prospects

The European Commission has warned France's new government over its spending plans. While freshly elected President François Hollande says he'll lower the retirement age, the EU says it's the opposite that's required if France is to trim its deficit to 3% of GDP this year, along with reforms to its labour market.

Many also fear a return of the Taliban. People are applying for visas in all foreign embassies, with the most solicited being the Iranian one. Iran shares a language and culture with Afghanistan, yet it's not easy for Afghans to move there. Those who manage it are often expelled and sent home.

African Union accuses ICC of racism

The head of the African Union, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, has accused the International Criminal Court of "race-hunting". It's not the first time the The Hague-based institution has been accused of only prosecuting defendants from the African continent. However the ICC argues that the highest proportion of member states are based there, and that they are the ones who have instigated proceedings.

Muslims targeted after soldier murder in London

As British police try to work out the motives of the murder of a soldier in London last week, they are also having to handle a rise in abuse targeted at the UK's Islamic community as a result of the killing. The number of recorded incidents of verbal and physical attacks on Muslims has rocketed since the attack, with the fascist English Defence League holding an increasing number of rallies calling for followers of the religion to leave the country.
