Diane Pernet

Who is this American woman behind the cats-eye glasses and veiled sky-high hair?

Cinephiles and fashionistas, mark your calendars for the next fashion film festival to be held this November at the Georges Pompidou centre in the heart of Paris. "A Shaded View on Fashion Film" is the creation of cult fashion curator Diane Pernet. But who is this American woman behind the cats-eye glasses and veiled sky-high hair? Fashion takes a closer look.

Diane Pernet grew out of those girly days to work in New York in the 1980s as a fashion and movie costume designer. Nowadays her wardrobe is iconic, unvarying and above all...black.

In the 1990s Diane gave up fashion design to focus on documentary films. In 2005 she combined the two, creating her first fashion film festival in Los Angeles.

Fashion films have evolved over the years from self-produced pieces to integral parts of brand marketing, such as when photographer Helen Von Unwerth films for lingerie brand Chantal Thomas.

So will the fashion film festival soon become the fashion advertising film festival? Film entries will be accepted until September 15th, but no commercial clips are allowed. It’s strictly fashion for fashion’s sake.
