On November 22nd, debt-ridden Ireland announced an ambitious austerity plan designed to secure a 85-billion-euro bailout from the EU and IMF. Speaking in Strasbourg, EU President Herman Van Rompuy sought to ease fears that Ireland's troubles would spread to Portugal and Spain but markets have remained jittery. She has just returned from Greece where 175 EU officers have been mobilised to help the authorities stem an influx of undocumented migrants across its border with Turkey. It is the first time that a rapid-intervention border team has been deployed to an EU member state since the Frontex teams were created in 2007. Mrs Malmström also tells us how the EU can respond to the recent terror threats.

Despite hailing the constitutional reform as a positive development, Brussels said that Turkey was still lagging behind in areas like press freedom, freedom of expression and religion and the integration of the Kurdish minority in the country. We interviewed Jean-Claude Juncker right after a key EU summit that focused on tightening the Economic Governance of Europe. The President of the Eurogroup told us that the agreed economic sanctions on member states running up large budget deficits are not ambitious enough. He also warns it is too early to declare that the Euro crisis is over.
