Rio+20: The Future We Want
Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro has just hosted the largest ever international sustainability summit. Rio+20 marks two decades since the Rio Earth Summit put sustainable development high up on the global agenda for the first time. How far have we come since 1992, and how far do we still have to go?
The summit promoted the concept of environmentally-friendly economic development, a so-called ‘green economy’. It’s being put to the test in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, where some farmers are managing to grow profitable crops, without harming the environment.
The Barefoot College, in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is teaching illiterate women from around the world to make and mend solar lamps. After a six-month stay at the College, they return home as solar engineers.
And we find out how a lick of paint is helping reduce global warming. A law in California requires all new commercial buildings to paint their rooves white, which means sunlight and heat are reflected back into the atmosphere.
