French soldiers killed in French Guiana illegal goldmining fight
The deaths of two French soldiers in French Guiana has cast the spotlight on the battle faced by the French colony against the illegal gold mining industry. Local authorities have cracked down on the practice, saying it's responsible for ecological damage, while it also attracts fortune hunters from neighbouring countries who cross the border illegally. But with dense rainforest covering 90% of French Guiana's territory, it will be almost impossible to eliminate the problem entirely.
