New addictions

Addicted to smoking, gambling, or sex... old habits die hard. Today, there’s a new generation of dependencies: clubbing drugs, mobile phones... Some of these addictions require new solutions.

By Mairead DUNDAS

We begin in the United Kingdom where heroin and cocaine consumption is falling, but the use of so-called clubbing drugs is on the rise. There is a new type of drug user, and they are taking the health system by surprise. We head to Leeds where a treatment centre has been designed specifically to deal with this challenge.

Next we head to Oregon, home to the worst methamphetamine epidemic in the United States. However, a radical programme is forcing addicts to decide between drug rehabilitation treatments and giving up their children. The early results are remarkable.

Finally, we look at how Requip, a medicine used to treat Parkinson’s disease, has led certain patients to develop gambling and sex addictions. We see what happens when a prescription drug triggers compulsive behaviour.
