India: the school where women become solar engineers

This week, Environment heads to India to discover the Barefoot College, a school like no other. Here, 40 elderly women from outside India leave their families behind for six months to learn how to become solar engineers.

By Mairead DUNDAS

Nestled in a desert village of Rajasthan lies a school like no other. Its students are grandmothers from the poorest corners of the globe, many of them away from home for the first time. They've come to India to earn a diploma as a solar engineer. In six months these women will graduate and return to their communities in Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. They'll take home solar lanterns and their newfound expertise.

France 24's reporters spent several days at India's Barefoot College for this week's special edition of Environment.
