Kofi Annan resigns from mission to save Syria
Kofi Annan, the man the UN and Arab League hoped would find a solution to the Syrian crisis, has admittted defeat. In his capacity as Special Envoy to Syria, the Ghanaian diplomat and former UN Secretary General had proposed a "six point plan" to bring about a ceasefire between the Damascus regime and Syrian rebels. It had little impact; now Annan says the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, needs to unite to tackle the situation - and the rest of the UN agrees.
