Immigrant Olympians embraced as British when they win gold

In the international papers, more details emerge about the man reported to have killed several people outside a Sikh temple, and a piece says that Sikhs in the US have been scapegoats since September 11, 2001. In the Middle East, one pundit says the US should withhold military aid to Egypt until it sorts out the security vacuum in the Sinai. Finally, at the mid-point of the Olympics, the Independent asks why UK immigrants are suddenly embraced as British - when they do well.

Wade Page, who died in a shoot-out with police outside a Sikh temple last weekend, is heavily covered in the US papers. The New York Times reports that he was an army veteran and a singer in rock bands that specialised in lyrics of hate. He was on the watch list of the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which says that white supremacist groups have used bands and record labels to fund raise and recruit. The Huffington Post has a series of photos of the shooting aftermath.

And the Guardian says the Sikh community has been a scapegoat in the US since September 11, 2001.

In the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reports on the shooting of several Egyptian soldiers at a border checkpoint in the Sinai. The paper argues that the US should withhold military aid until the new Egyptian government addresses the major security concerns in the region.

In the Olympics, the Independent’s Yasmin Alibhai Brown says the gongs going to immigrants and 2nd or 3rd generation Britons poses problems to those who have been questioning the right of immigrants to live in the UK.
