Platinum mine protests spark deadly police stand-off
A strike at the Marikana platinum mine in South Africa turned into a bloodbath on Thursday when security forces shot protesters. Clashes between the police and protesters have killed at least 40 people since the beginning of the strike. Two major trade unions are fighting for supremacy while platinum mining, a driving force for the country's economy, is taking a big hit.
