South African police have issued an arrest warrant for controversial activist Julius Malema, his lawyer confirmed Friday, after media reports linked him to fraud and corruption charges relating to a family trust.
"We were notified today that a warrant of arrest was issued against Julius Malema. We don't have information on the charges and we don't have a copy of the warrant," Nicqui Galaktiou told AFP.
She said that Malema, who has been inflaming mining industry tensions in recent weeks by inciting mine workers to strike for better wages, planned to turn himself in.
"We are engaging the authorities to arrange his appearance in court for next week," she said.
In an online report, City Press said the warrant related to a family trust and its share of a company that has earned millions from government tenders in his home province.
The firebrand activist was expelled from the ruling African National Congress earlier this year for lacking discipline.
