Coal comeback ?

We start in Germany where more than a dozen new coal-fired power plants are under construction to fill the energy gap left as the country exits from nuclear sources.These so-called second generation power plants are supposedly more efficient and greener than those of the past but not everyone is ready to buy the idea of ‘clean coal’.

Next we head to India where the government’s rush to harness its enormous coal reserves has already led to a $33 billion corruption scandal that has paralysed domestic politics. But beyond the headline-grabbing scam, there is perhaps an even greater human and environmental cost to India’s dependency on coal.
