Following the first of three live television debates between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Obama hit out at Romney for allegedly misrepresenting his policies during the debate. Romney was widely seen as putting in a stronger performance in front of the audience in Denver, surprising many observers of US politics.

Eight million Toyota vehicles worldwide had to be recalled after a fault was found with accelerators, and detachable carpets kept sticking to the pedals. A report published by the French welfare office reveals that many abortions could be avoided if women were better educated about contraceptives. The study refers to a paradoxical situation in France: whilst the number of women using contraception is among the highest in the world, the number of abortions is disproportionately high.
