The urban way of still life

Sean Rose takes us on a trip to "Magical City", a fascinating exhibition in Lille dealing with the influence of the modern city on the visual arts between 1913 and 1950. Through painting, photography and cinema, the exhibition focuses on three major cities: New York, Berlin and Paris. It is an exhibition which traces the adventure of the Dutch avant-garde movement, De Stijl (literarily “The Style”) and the career of one of three pioneers of abstract art: Piet Mondrian, with Kandinsky and Malevich.
