Same-sex marriage: an ideological hurdle for the French

French newspapers are taking a look at former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s diary and speculating on what his future might hold. Same-sex marriage is also back in the headlines, with opposition from politicians, the church and local authorities.

Le Parisien puts Nicolas Sarkozy on its front page, running an article on his rendez-vous with a Brazilian investment bank.

Online paper Rue89 suggests that his decision to speak to the bankers was a little hypocritical, since he’d always refused to associate himself with these types of financial institutions.

Libération evokes the opposition that the government could face in passing a law to allow same-sex marriage. An editorial explores the ideological obstacles to homosexuality in French history.

And Paris gets in line to see Edward Hopper: the American artist’s work is going on show at the Grand Palais. Le Monde gives us a preview.
