Black fashion week

The first edition of Black Fashion Week was held in Paris, rue Cambon, just steps away from the house of Chanel. Organized by Senegalese fashion designer Adama Ndiaye, the event showcased the cultural richness of the black diaspora so as to familiarize the French press with ‘black fashion’ that’s not only African. But to no avail, the press didn’t take the time to make it to the event. Adama produced Black Fashion Week in Prague, the Cheque Republic and in Bahia in Brazil. For the past 10 years she’s also run the Dakar Fashion Week where she helped local fashionistas discover international stylists. Now in Paris, it’s the opposite...
New York based stylist Laquan Smith, conceived outfits for Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Courtney Love.....
Jamila Lafqir started her career in caftans. Her goal? Modernize the traditional Moroccan wear...
Modernizing men’s traditional european fashion is the goal of brand J-Cheikh. Founded in 2009 in Chicago by Cheikh Lam and Sophie Lin.
Nigerian designer Alphadi works to shine the spotlight on African stylists by communicating and explaining to his clients. It’s the role of a personal stylist and personal shopper.
So called black fashion doesn’t have the same color rules and trends as so called international fashion, but one thing is for sure, it is not done only by blacks for blacks. It’s revealing a desire to be recognized on a large scale
Experts have called the event cliquish. Perhaps, but no more than the predominately white fashion weeks the rule the runways.
