Terrorism: a homegrown threat?

Is there a mounting home-grown terrorist threat in France? This is the question rankling officials after the police gunned down a Frenchman suspected of throwing a grenade into a Jewish grocery store several weeks ago. A dozen alleged accomplices have since been arrested and bomb components discovered in a search by police, alongside a list of Jewish institutions that could be targets.

François Hollande: is he up to the task?

It's a new year and hopefully a new chapter for François Hollande. His first six months in office were tough. With unemployment relentlessly on the rise, his popularity at a record low and a humiliating rebuke by France's Constitutional Court of his bid to slap a 75% tax rate on the super-rich, the Socialist president is struggling. Is the government thinking first and foremost about social justice or listening to the wishes of the financial markets? This is not just a theoretical debate, but crucial to understanding where France is heading in the midst of a prolonged economic crisis.

France's Gaullist Party: Leadership war continues

On the menu today, the UMP saga continues. It's still Copé versus Fillon, but it's now happening behind closed doors after two weeks of very public onslaught. Meanwhile, the government is shaking as its Green Party ministers are fed up with a series of environmentally-unfriendly decisions, and as its budget minister is under fire for an alleged hidden bank account in Switzerland.
