Heavy rain falls on the Place de la Concorde in Paris as Moroccan artist Majida Khattari presents her 5th ‘runway performance.’ For 20 years she’s studied the connection between the body and the clothing that enhances, hides and binds it. Her work unites fashion and art.
The visual artist plays with the words “veil” and “headscarf.” She hides the fake nudity of her models with a barrier of fabric and screens that project mythical cinematic scenes.
The surrealist inspired performance took place during the all-night Parisian cultural event, Nuit Blanche. A few days later, in celebration of the Arab World Institute’s 25 th anniversary, Majida Khattari took to a male accessory: the turban.
Turbans are a sign of religious affiliation, and the search for intellectual elevation. But the artist excludes all conceit.
Khattari’s 6th runway performance is written in multiple acts, like an opera. For the finale, men and women stop fighting each other
Majida Khattari doesn’t flirt with the forbidden. She goes beyond it with humor. Daring all to to take part in self-reflection.
