Israel, Holy Land of Contemporary Art

In this edition we're heading for the Middle East: the "Pluriel" exhibition at Villa Emerige in Paris surveys Israel’s contemporary art scene, with some 15 artists from different backgrounds. The fascinating thing about these artists is how they turn the social and political context they live in into form: painting, photo, video, installation.

Also, the “Dürer and his time” exhibition celebrates Paris’ School of Fine Arts’ rich collection of drawings and etchings. Engravings by the most famous German Renaissance artists are shown alongside works by lesser-known artists from Northern Europe.

Let there be light!

Fiat lux! Let there be light! Our art critic Sean Rose takes us to see two exhibitions full of luminous dynamism. Cinema: Wonderful Romance and Evil Energy Companies

French polymath Boris Vian's 1947 novel "L'Ecume des jours" has been brought to the screen with relentless creativity by director Michel Gondry. Upstaged by hand-made gizmos and analogue special effects, Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou and Omar Sy star in the film, whose English title is "Mood Indigo."

Phoenix reborn

Phoenix are a French band who sell more records in America than in France. Winners of a Grammy Award in 2009, they are releasing their fifth album with accents of the 80s. The ever-changing David Bowie is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Aladdin Sane, another character from his collection of pseudonyms. And although his name doesn’t make it apparent, Hanni el Khatib is American and is putting out a new album which is pure rebel rock and roll.
