When it passed a law allowing marriage "between persons of the same sex" in 2003, Belgium became only the second country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. Unlike in France, the move did not spark a controversial debate or encounter staunch opposition. Today, same sex marriage is generally well-accepted by the public and political class in Belgium.

French President François Hollande has said he'll pull troops out of Mali by the end of April. The move came as it was announced that another French soldier had been killed in the country, the fourth since France launched a military intervention against jihadists that were threatening stability in the African state. Monday 11th March will mark 2 years since the tsunami that killed 16,000 people and caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Hundreds of thousands were left homeless when their houses were washed away by the tide, while others were evacuated from the zone surrounding the nuclear power plant. Yet 24 months later, some 300,000 survivors are still living in makeshift residential "camps" and the effort to build new homes for those affected could take another ten years.

2 years after a bloody civil war broke out in Syria, the number of refugees crossing into neighbouring countries has surpassed the 1 million mark. Yet the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees says the numbers continue to rise at an alarming rate, as thousands cross daily into neighbouring countries, including Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq - and around 50% of them are children.
