Northeastern US still reeling after superstorm Sandy

On October 29th, superstorm Sandy hit the east coast of the United States, flooding large swathes of New Jersey and Manhattan and leaving a massive trail of damage in its wake. 121 people died in the superstorm and its aftermath. Almost two weeks later, things are far from getting back to normal. The New York subway has been swiftly put back in service, but thousands of people are still without power.

Prisons, the nation's shame

France's jails, ranked among the worst in Europe by human rights groups, have been described by French President Nicolas Sarkozy as the country's "shame". A bill designed to address the crisis is now in the hands of French lawmakers.
