Rebel groups, now formally recognised as a legitimate political force by many outside countries, say the ongoing fighting has cost 40,000 lives. But how far on are the rebels into their goal of overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad's regime?

Prisons, the nation's shame

France's jails, ranked among the worst in Europe by human rights groups, have been described by French President Nicolas Sarkozy as the country's "shame". A bill designed to address the crisis is now in the hands of French lawmakers.
