The unrest in Syria broke out more than a year and a half ago, in March 2011. Rebel groups, now formally recognised as a legitimate political force by many outside countries, say the ongoing fighting has cost 40,000 lives. But how far on are the rebels into their goal of overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad's regime?
