Contemporary art: Turkish delights in Paris
We get a taste of Turkey’s contemporary art scene with a group show at Paris’ Espace Louis Vuitton, near the eponymous handbag store on the Champs Elysées. The Turkish art scene reflects the country’s variegated past and plural present. Some question the idea of borders.
Hell Heaven (2012) by Murat Akagündüz is an installation juxtaposing large-scale landscapes from his childhood and a film of the Euphrates’ tumultuous waters of river. Others address women’s issues or gender politics such as Canan’s cartoon on her Kurdish family history or Silva Bingaz’s slideshow of her friends and neighbours.
