Andrea Crews

A small street is closed to traffic near the Butte Montmartre in Paris. It’s time for the 10 year anniversary runway show of Andrea Crews. But just who is Andrea Crews?

t’s time for the 10 year anniversary runway show of... Andrea Crews. But just who is Andrea Crews?

Andrea Crews is a collective of artists that was created in 2002 at the Palais de Tokyo during a performance by artist Maroussia Rebecq. The concept? To promote old clothing. Recycle the trash of fashion to recreate wearable designs that people would actually buy. Take for an example this traditional classic denim shirt.

The Andrea Crews collective is also involved in art and activism. Its most famous cause? Burning Vogue. Since 2010 the groups has set blaze to the American magazine in the hopes of denouncing the use of glossy paper.... It’s a highly seductive endeavour.

Such a collection was conceived with Japanese retail giant Uniqlo: a basic sweater decorated with leather tassels (strips). As for the anniversary show, it took place at L140. A one room hotel that is in fact an artistic piece where the windows frost over on command.

Andrea Crews? It’s a an experiment that today has found credibility as much on the mass market as on the underground market. In short: it’s a realist utopia.
