Amnesty International sounds the alarm over Mexico torture
Mexico has seen a severe increase in the number of torture cases in the past few years. Complaints received by the National Human Rights Commission in Mexico increased by more than 400% from 2007 to 2011, up to nearly 1700 cases last year. The outgoing government has strived to tackle organised crime over its five-year term, but bringing in measures to safeguard the civilian population has fallen by the wayside.
