THE OBSERVERS

A show produced with photos, videos and personal accounts from our Observers around the world - all checked by our staff here in Paris. Saturday at 10.15 am Paris time.

Latest update : 2012-12-05

Our Observers film the fall of Goma in DR Congo and a mob killing in Gaza

This show is made up entirely of amateur images. We've seen time and time again how images captured by ordinary citizens then uploaded onto the Web can change history, or at least shift the balance of power. This week, we take a look back at some of those moments.

Story 1: DR Congo

The report you're about to see comes from two of our most dedicated Observers. They live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the enormous country in central Africa formerly known as Zaire. They're in the eastern part of the country, which has seen years of on-and-off fighting between dozens of different groups - national armies, mutinous soldiers, rebels, you name it. The latest is an uprising by a group of former soldiers known as M23. Our Observers, Charly Kasereka et Alain Wandimoyi, were in the regional capital Goma when the rebels arrived.

Story 2: Gaza

It was one of the most disturbing images of Israel's latest conflict with the Gaza Strip: the bodies of six men being dragged through the streets behind motorcycles. Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the strip, accused the men of being Israeli spies, of calling in targeting information for airstrikes. We spoke to a young man who was there when a mob killed the men. He filmed it, and then - at great risk to himself - shared his reaction with us.

Hamas has denounced the mob violence, and says the people responsible for killing the men will be brought to justice.

Story 3: World

Now for our weekly roundup of images and stories sent in by our Observers.

First stop, China. These long lines of people waited not for the latest iPhone, or for Rolling Stones tickets... but for cabbages. China's farmers had a bumper crop this year, but that's led to a collapse in prices. Many farmers have chosen to let their cabbages rot in the ground. But others have decided to give them away for free, to the delight of Chinese consumers.

Now to Kenya, east Africa, in the town of Garissa, near the border with Somalia. Our observer Michel tells us residents are used to seeing Kenyan Army troops in the area - part of their ongoing efforts to fight Somalia's al Shabab militia. But the soldiers brought violence to the town itself recently. Angry over the killing of three of their men, soldiers opened fire in the town, killing one person and hitting seven others.

Finally today, little boys everywhere play with toy guns. But if you live somewhere like Libya, then you've seen real guns in action. You know what they look like, and you even have real parts to play with. Thanks to our Observer Khaled for sending in the photo.
