Oscar Niemeyer, a Brazilian national icon and one of the most celebrated architects of the past 60 years, died on Wednesday in a Rio de Janeiro hospital, aged 104. Here are some of his most famous works.

The Brazilian architect who designed his country’s modernist capital, Brasilia, and the United Nations building passed away on Wednesday in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Oscar Niemeyer died of a lung infection little more than a week before he would have turned 105, the hospital said.

Niemeyer was regarded as a visonary for using reinforced concrete to produce curvaceous buildings around the world – the star architect often said his inspiration came from the hilly landscape of his birthplace, Rio de Janeiro.

Winner of architecture’s top award in 1988, the Pritzker Prize, Niemeyer designed 400 buildings, including the seat of the French communist party in Paris, and had some 20 other projects under way.

Brazilian President Dilma Roussef paid tribute to Oscar Niemeyer, calling him "a revolutionary, the mentor of a new architecture (…) Brazil today lost one of its geniuses. It's a day for mourning,"
