Turkish state censorship lifted (but only in part)

Ankara has just lifted a ban on some 500 books considered to be either contrary to Kemalist principles or opposed to state interests. The decision coincides with attempts to reconcile Turkish and European laws to aid Turkey’s application for EU membership. This reform only covers a tiny proportion of some 20,000 blacklisted publications and Turkish publishers and the press are far from appeased. Turkey is considered to be among the countries where freedom of expression is under greatest threat.
