Marseille-Provence 2013, Mediterranean cultural hot spot

Our art critic Sean Rose heads to Marseille and has picked the best places to visit as France’s Southern metropolis and its region kick off this year as European Capital of Culture. The Museum of European and Mediterranean Cultures - Mucem - was just inaugurated this Saturday by French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. This impressive building that actually opened in June was designed by Marseille-born architect Rudy Ricciotti.

The Mucem will house the permanent collection of Paris’s former anthropology museum "Musée de l’Homme". Emblematic of Marseille’s openness to the world, this new museum celebrates the cultural diversity of the Mediterranean region. The building reflects the idea of circulation and transit, and also of rootedness in this particular landscape bordering the Mediterranean. Another must-see event is the exhibition "Ici, ailleurs" at the industrial site-turned-cultural centre "La Friche de La Belle de Mai".
