Three candidates are taking centre stage: the centre-left’s Pier Luigi Bersani, the outgoing technocrat Mario Monti, and the flamboyant former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Whoever wins this election will lead the eurozone’s third-largest economy. That’s why it matters for the rest of Europe.
