'The Origin of the World'... was Irish!

The subject of Gustave Courbet's controversial painting of the female genitalia has been identified! Irishwoman Joanna Hifferman was the lover of Courbet's friend James Whistler. Courbet's painting therefore did not just focus on genitalia but was a nude that included the subject's head and shoulders.
