Online campaign seeks justice for slain Saudi girl
Reports that an Islamic preacher in Saudi Arabia raped and killed his five year old daughter, Lama, back in October triggered a wave of emotion online. Sentiment turned to outrage when the perpetrator, who was arrested in November, was released at the end of January. Activists say that rather than the death sentence or a lengthy prison term, the court ruled the prosecution could only seek “blood money”, and so the defendant paid around 200,000 riyals, which is around 50,000 dollars. Web users are up in the arms over the sentencing and have taken to social networks to voice their anger.
Twitter users have been posting under the hashtags #IamLama, #AnaLama or #JusticeforLama, expressing their outrage over the verdict, which they feel is far too lenient. They say the ruling is a disgrace for the legal system and urge the authorities to reverse the decision as soon as possible and deliver a harsher punishment for the appalling act.
The main objective of the online campaign is to seek justice for the murdered little girl, to draw attention to this tragic tale and her terrible fate, but it also hopes to help improve women’s rights in the kingdom. Many web users feel this story is the depressing illustration of what it’s like to be a woman in Saudi Arabia. Women and girls are considered as second class citizens and men totally control their lives, they have the power of life and death over them and the legal system allows this to happen.
China : mysterious Xi Jinping blogger comes out
For over two months now, this social network account devoted to Xi Jinping has really got Chinese web users wondering. Many believed the Communist Party leader’s communication team was actually behind the fan club trying to portray him as accessible and close to the people.
But it turns out the account which was set up back in November, is not a hidden propaganda campaign. The administrator has revealed his identity in an exclusive interview for The Associated Press. His name is Zhang Hongming and he is a migrant worker. He says he is simply a genuine fan of China’s future president, and decided to come out so as to put an end to the speculation surrounding the identity of the person behind the micro blog and why there were doing it.
The exclusive information on Xi Jinping’s every move and the intimate snap shots posted by the blogger over the past few weeks had raised numerous questions. Many saying only someone very close to the president in waiting would have been able to take the photos. But the fan club administrator has explained that the pictures were sent in by web users who had met Xi Jinping on official visits to various provinces.
The blogger says he published the photos to give a more human face to China’s future president who is due to officially take office in March. And the fan club is proving very successful; it now has over 770,000 followers.
