Vatileaks comes back to haunt the papacy

The disturbing contents of a secret dossier could be the real reason the pope has stepped down, according to one Italian daily, as the country prepares to go to the polls this weekend. In the US, a man on death row has had his execution stayed due to concerns about his mental capacities. Finally, in Quebec the language police are enforcing their bilingual law.

Vatileaks is back in the headlines, as Italian daily La Repubblica claims that the pope’s departure was really down to the contents of a “disturbing” dossier. Libero takes a look at allegations of lobbying and blackmail, while Courrier International sketches out Italy’s other problems, as the country goes to the polls this weekend.

In the US, a man on death row has got a stay of execution, amid international outcry surrounding his case. The Guardian reports that the state of Georgia could be in a hurry to give Warren Hill the lethal injection, while The Independent asks whether his death sentence is ethical.

Finally, the language police pounce in Quebec – a restaurant owner is forced to translate items on his menu into French, even though it’s an Italian restaurant!
