Keeping political corruption in the family?

Three years ago, Viktor Yanukovich was inaugurated as Ukrainian president. This Monday, the country's leaders are in Brussels, hoping to make progress towards signing a historic "Association Agreement" with the EU. But Brussels is alarmed at developments in Ukraine: opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is in jail, last year’s elections were considered deeply flawed and organised crime appears to be rife.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Yanukovich’s home region, the Donbass. Here, a huge illegal coal mining industry has developed, unhindered by police. And many Ukrainians suspect that members of the president’s family have had their fingers in the pie.
