Cyprus Runs to Russia: the start of a New Cold War?

The papers are split on whether Barack Obama’s speech to Israelis was an engine for action or an excuse not to take any. Meanwhile, Cyprus is in search of a suitor, but what happens when she is driven into the arms of Russia? One paper warns of a possible new Cold War!

The New York Times cartoon says it all: it pictures Barack Obama needing the teleprompter to help him find warm words for Benjamin Netanyahu.

Theirs is not the warmest relationship, you see. While the papers agree he gave an outstanding speech to Israeli youngsters, they’re divided on how politically useful it will be.

The Economist calls it a "Corker of a Speech", saying it may provide the foundation for a new Middle East dialogue. That's not the view of The Financial Times, which laments a vast gap between Obama’s rhetoric and policy achievements.

Also, Cyprus is arousing increasing concern over the “Russian Connection”: The Daily Mail warns that if Cyprus falls into Vladimir Putin’s grip, “the West will have lost the first battle in the new Cold War.” Not the calm waters initially surrounding an island that produces 0.2 per cent of Europe’s GDP.
