Today on the net, campaigning in favour of marriage equality in the US is well underway online. Twin sisters separated at birth find each other through Facebook. And a Ukrainian stuntman shares some breathtaking shots of his death defying deeds.
USA: online support for marriage equality
Hopes are high among supporters of marriage equality as the US Supreme Court took up the debate on Tuesday. Between now and the month of June, justices from America’s highest judicial body will make a nationwide ruling on the recognition of marriage between two people of the same sex, a statute currently recognized in 9 of America’s 50 states.
Campaigning in favour of marriage equality is well underway online, using the colour red to promote support. Thousands of Facebook users, including politicians and celebrities, are using this profile picture demanding equal rights for all. The image was produced by the NGO “Human Rights Campaign” which works to achieve equality for LGBT Americans.
Activist groups and campaigners are making great use of social media to get their message across. This video was uploaded to YouTube by Daniel Martinez-Leffew, a 12 year old boy from California, and it has since gone viral. He was adopted by his two dads when he was five years old and appeals to Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, who has two adopted children of his own, to speak out in favour of same sex marriage.
And with polls suggesting Americans are showing more and more support for legal recognition of same sex matrimony, countless web users have been speaking out openly on where they stand on gay marriage: a debate that continues to divide the country.
Twin sisters find each other 25 years later using Facebook
Imagine, at the age of 25 you find out you have a twin sister, and as you wait to meet her in flesh you can get to know her via the Internet … This is the incredible story of Anaïs and Samantha.
A story that began back in December 2012 when Anaïs Bordier who was adopted from South Korea and raised in France stumbled upon a YouTube video featuring an American actress who looked just like her. Two months later she saw her double again in a movie trailer. Totally taken aback by this striking resemblance, Anaïs started doing a bit of online research about the actress, Samantha Futerman, and made an astonishing discovery: they were born on the same day and both adopted in Seoul.
With no doubt in her mind that Samantha was her twin sister, Anaïs set about getting in contact with the actress who lives thousands of kilometers away, via Facebook. After a couple of failed attempts, she managed to connect with Samantha who was just as taken aback and excited as she was.
The two women feel their story deserves to be shared with as many people as possible and have decided to continue the tale where it began : on the web. They have launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance a DNA test to confirm they are indeed twins, as well as a full length documentary about their incredible discovery. The film will focus on them as they prepare to meet in person for the very first time, something that look set to happen in the very near future.
Now trending on social networks
One web user, weary of all those press articles offering advice for women on how to protect themselves from sexual harassment, has launched the satirical hashtag #SafetyTipsforLadies, through which she shares all manner of ridiculous and wacky handy hints for women on how to avoid unwanted attention from sexual predators. She wants to remind people that the only ones at fault are the perpetrators of sexual attacks; that the victims are in no way to blame, regardless of how they were dressed or where they were when the attack happened. Her thread is proving extremely popular online, particularly among female social networkers…
Ukrainian daredevil performs death-defying stunts
Ukrainian stuntman, known as Mustang Wanted, is absolutely fearless, as will attest the numerous photos and videos he posts online.
