Palestinian fatally stabs Israeli man in West Bank

Text by News Wires

Latest update : 2013-04-30

A Palestinian man stabbed and killed a 32-year-old Israeli man waiting at a West Bank bus stop near the Palestinian city of Nablus on Tuesday and was detained by police after a firefight. The Palestinian was later taken to hospital for treatment.

A Palestinian man fatally stabbed an Israeli waiting at a bus stop in the West Bank on Tuesday, then was detained by officers after a firefight, police said.

Israeli media reported that the victim was a 32-year old man from a West Bank settlement. The attack took place at the Tapuah junction in the northern West Bank, near the Palestinian city of Nablus.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld described the assailant as a “Palestinian terrorist.”

Rosenfeld said the Palestinian stabbed the Israeli and took his gun, then opened fire at border police nearby. The officers returned fire, wounding the Palestinian who was then detained.

The Israeli man died of his wounds at the scene, Rosenfeld said.

The Palestinian, whose identity was not released, was later evacuated to hospital for treatment, Rosenfeld said.

The West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war from Jordan and claimed by Palestinians as part of their future state, has experienced a rise in violence lately but attacks such as Tuesday’s are rare.

Military spokesman Capt. Barak Raz said Palestinian rock throwing and fire bomb attacks are on the rise in the West Bank but that deadly attacks like Tuesday’s are on the decline.

Raz said an investigation was underway to determine whether the attacker on Tuesday acted alone or belonged to a militant group.

There have been rising tensions between Palestinians and Jewish settlers in rural areas of the West Bank in recent months. Palestinian youths have taken to hurling rocks with more frequency at passing vehicles. An Israeli baby girl was seriously injured earlier this year when Palestinians threw rocks at the car she was traveling in.

Palestinians charge that some settlers, particularly in smaller remote hilltop communities, are behind a series of attacks against Palestinians and their property.
