Anti-gay marriage activists to target Tour de France

Text by FRANCE 24

Latest update : 2013-06-12

Opponents of France’s new law allowing same-sex marriage and adoption say they will use the Tour de France’s international exposure to voice their opposition to the "marriage for all" law that came into force in May.

French anti-gay marriage activists plan to exploit the “extraordinary international visibility” of this summer’s Tour de France to voice their opposition to a law allowing same sex couples to marry and adopt children.

The movement is dubbed “Tour de France Pour Tous” [Tour de France for everyone],  a play in words of the law, itself known as “Mariage Pour Tous” [Marriage for Everyone”].

Launched on social media sites on Monday, the effort is being led by Samuel Lafont, a member of the conservative opposition UMP party and a vocal opponent of the gay marriage law that was voted in on May 17.

“From all regions of France, come out and participate in the ‘Tour de France Pour Tous’,” he wrote on the event’s Facebook page. “From June 29 to July 21, we will have extraordinary international visibility. We must use this opportunity to demonstrate our opposition to this law and to the modern gender theories that lie behind it.”

“The idea is not to disrupt the race, but to be visible on French and international news media, at every stage of the race,” he added.

The Tour de France will take place over 21 stages in all regions of France, covering more than 3,000km. The event enjoys a huge international following.

Contacted by FRANCE 24, Tour de France organiser Amaury Sport Organisation spokesman said the group would not comment on the anti-gay marriage initiative.
