The songs of the Brazilian protests

Today on the net: the songs of the Brazilian protests; a commercial featuring an interracial family sparks lively debate in the US; and NASA has released a 360° panorama of the planet Mars.

The songs of the Brazilian protests

"Vem Pra Rua" or in English “Come to the streets": this was initially a song composed for a commercial for car company Fiat. It was aired in Brazil during the Confederations Cup football tournament, to encourage citizens to take to the streets to show their support of the national team.

But protesters in Brazil, who denounce the vast sums of money spent on organizing major sporting competitions in the country, have interpreted the lyrics written by the group O Rappa entirely differently. The song has become something of an anthem for activists, and a rallying cry on social networks.

An unprecedented social movement that has inspired a great many local artists: in the first few days of the unrest, Brazilian rocker Leoni recorded and uploaded this song called “Things don’t fall from the sky” to motivate protesters to take action to bring about positive change in the country.

Musician Thiago Correa has been inspired by the banners and other written messages brandished and waved by protesters across the country, and he has incorporated the words into this song, which reiterates the demands being made by the people of Brazil.

 

Interracial Cheerios ad generates online debate

This commercial for breakfast cereal Cheerios has been aired online for the past month and has generated lively debate in the US as it features an interracial family. The ad sparked an avalanche of racist remarks, there were so many hateful posts in fact, that the commenting function on the YouTube page had to be disabled.

Debate continues however on the brand’s Facebook page, where countless web users have hailed the ad’s depiction of an American family, promising to go out and buy Cheerios to show the company support.

And actors have decided to add a new twist to the original commercial to highlight and condemn the stream of negative feedback. This satirical clip features the mixed race little girl and her parents, this time a lesbian couple. It ends with a message aimed at teaching tolerance and acceptance of others.

And finally photographer Michael David Murphy, who is married to an African American woman, thinks mixed race families are underrepresented in the media. And so he created this site called “We are the 15%”, in reference to the percentage of new interracial marriages in the US. On the platform, interracial families and couples from across the US can send in their family pictures, to share with the world.


 

NASA releases panoramic view of Mars

Mars like have never seen it before… NASA has just released this panoramic pic of the red planet. The image contains over 1 billion pixels and is composed of almost 900 photos taken between October and November by cameras on board the Mars rover Curiosity, currently on an exploration mission on the red planet. The interactive panorama allows you to zoom in and look around the Martian landscape as if you were actually standing on the surface.

A tightrope walker from the age of two Nik Wallenda who crossed the Niagara Falls last year, has become the first person to cross the Grand Canyon on a high wire, 450 meters above ground, with no safety net or harness. His stunt took 23 minutes to complete, was broadcast on the television and received widespread commentary on Twitter under the hashtag #skywire, many sharing their fears Wallenda would fall, others added a more lighthearted tone, like here for example with this montage of Barack Obama totally awestruck by the daredevil high wire artist’s amazing feat.

American artists Paul Cummings and Eriq Wities produced this video from over 1,500 photos uploaded to the Instagram mobile phone app. The short film, which is currently doing the rounds online, follows the misadventures of a man desparately trying to enjoy a day out at the beach.
