USA: reactions to George Zimmerman’s acquittal

Today on the net: American web users react to George Zimmerman’s acquittal; the online tools to follow and monitor the upcoming elections in Cambodia; and an American astronaut demonstrates how she washes her hair in space.

USA: reactions to George Zimmerman’s acquittal

On Saturday George Zimmerman left the Sanford courtroom a free man. The neighbourhood- watch volunteer from Florida was acquitted of the 2012 murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin. The case has revived fierce debate about racial profiling in the US and the outcome of the trial has sparked an avalanche of comments on social networks.

Some web users are convinced Zimmerman shot the teenager in legitimate self-defense and have hailed the verdict. The brother of the accused, Robert, has posted a message to Twitter saying he is proud to be American.

Others however have said the ruling is a disgrace to the US legal system. Many web users, including the victim’s father, Tracy Martin, took to the web and the streets voicing their deception, disappointment and outrage upon hearing the ruling.

And with many youths now seeking revenge, saying they want Zimmerman dead, leaders of the black community, like Reverend Jesse Jackson for example have posted messages on Twitter appealing for calm, and urging followers not to express their anger through violence.

The nation’s oldest and largest civil rights group, the NAACP is conveying a similar message, and has also responded with a call to action, petitioning the US Department of Justice to seek justice for Trayvon Martin by filing civil rights charges against Zimmerman. Within hours of the online posting, the document had already gathered over 100 000 signatures.

Online resources to monitor Cambodian elections

Campaigning is well underway in Cambodia with the general election scheduled for July 28th. Here’s a look at some of the growing number of online resources available to help follow and understand the upcoming elections, and the candidates in the running.

Open Development Cambodia has developed a site providing voters with all sorts of information on the electoral process and the candidates hoping to become MPS. The stated aim is to help citizens make an informed decision on voting day.

The organization "Cambodian voter voice" has a similar objective and has launched a platform devoted to the election, which also gives web users the opportunity to question the candidates directly on issues of importance to them.

The Committee for Free and Fair elections is collecting and sharing all news updates relating to the Cambodian election. The organization is highly active online, and regularly communicates via Twitter and Facebook.

And finally, online publication The Cambodia Daily, is offering a more journalistic take on the elections and has devoted a special segment to cover the elections, with a particular focus on the different topics discussed and debated in campaigning.

Great art in ugly rooms

A Jean-Michel Basquiat canvas in a fast food joint, a Dan Flavin fluorescent light sculpture on a toilet, and a Cindy Sherman picture in a launderette … the creators of this “Great Art in Ugly Rooms” blog have taken works of art and juxtaposed them in the unlikeliest of interiors … a somewhat offbeat project which will no doubt be a hit with art lovers everywhere.

Fully dressed female comic characters

Tired of seeing the female characters in video games or manga comics in super sexy get ups and dressed quite differently from their male counterparts, one web user who goes under the online pseudonym Tica has set up a Tumblr blog on which web users can give the female warriors an outfit overhaul and provide them with more suitable gear for fighting their enemies. The initiative is proving hugely popular and the blog has received numerous contributions.

Video of the day

Can you wash your hair in space? Yes you can, and astronaut Karen Nyberg demonstrates how in this video filmed aboard the International Space Station. This clip, just like all those uploaded over the past few years by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, help us gain a better insight to life as an astronaut in orbit around earth.
