The body of a 47-year-old woman who was washed out to sea off the Brittany island of Belle-Île was found Monday, French maritime officials said, another victim of a fierce storm that tore through the English channel and northern France overnight.

The body of a 47-year-old woman who was washed out to sea off the Brittany island of Belle-Île was found on Monday, maritime officials said, after strong storms hit northern France, southern England and Wales before moving on to the Netherlands.

Helicopter crews scoured the sea off Belle-Île in Brittany while search operations both on the coast and in the water were hampered by high winds and six-metre waves.

Sources said the woman had been washed out to sea in an area under high cliffs.

All of Brittany was placed under “Orange” alert on Sunday night in anticipation of the storm, which peaked with 113km/h winds at 4am on Monday.

The “Orange” alert level had been lifted by noon on Monday, just after the woman disappeared.

In England, winds of up to 160 km per hour were recorded at the southern Isle of Wight early Monday.

Meanwhile, toppled trees crushed cars, damaged properties and flooding made some roads impassable in much of southern England.

A 17-year-old girl died after a tree fell onto the static home she was sleeping in at Hever, Kent Police said.

Hertfordshire police said a man in his 50s was killed when a tree fell on a car in Watford.

Police said one London man died in an apparent gas explosion at his home and a teenage boy drowned Sunday after being swept to sea while playing in the surf at Newhaven.

In the Netherlands, police said a woman was killed when a tree fell on her in Amsterdam and advised people to stay indoors.
