Like most of us at the age of seventeen, Emmanuel Perrotin didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. Unlike most of us, he decided to try art dealing. His choice of career brought him a popularity-boosting - if not very lucrative - tie-up with a pre-stardom Damien Hirst, as well as career-long relationships with the likes of Takashi Murakami and Maurizio Cattelan.
As he celebrates 25 years in the industry, Emmanuel tells Catherine Nicholson why he thinks megabucks art deals don’t have to stifle artistic creativity, and how he’s representing a quarter century of art at a special anniversary exhibition at the Tripostal Museum in Lille.
“Happy Birthday Galerie Perrotin / 25 ans” is on at Tripostal, Lille, France, until 12 January 2014.
