Committing acts of terrorism in the name of Islam gives ammunition to Islamophobes, Turkish President Abdullah Gül said in a speech Wednesday, calling on the Muslim world to promote the idea that “there is no room for terrorism in Islam”.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül on Wednesday blamed acts of terrorism committed in the name of Islam for undermining the religion's image in the world and spurring the growth of Islamophobia, while calling on Muslim countries to intensify their efforts to promote the idea that “there is no room for terrorism in Islam”.

Gül said that "violence and terrorist activities" that see "some evil people and circles exploiting our sacred Islamic values for their heinous aims" play a big role "in the perpetuation of this problem”. Gül was speaking to Muslim leaders as he delivered the inaugural address in Istanbul of the 29th session of COMCEC, the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Islamophobia, he said, still remains a critical problem that instigates “groundless biases against Islam and Muslims”, adding that all Islamic countries should promote the idea that “there is no room for terrorism in Islam”.
