US television to adapt French porn-themed series ‘Hard’

Until recently, nobody cared much about French TV series except for the French. But times are changing, as a growing number of English-language TV networks are broadcasting or adapting popular French shows.

“Hard”, a dark comedy about a prudish widow, Sophie, who has inherited her husband’s porn company, is reportedly the latest of a string of French series to attract the attention of producers in the US.

Popular TV channel HBO is said to be in the early stages of developing an American adaptation of the show, according to prominent entertainment publication Variety, and has brought “Sex and the City” writer Jenny Bicks in on the project.

The series, which premiered on French channel Canal+ in 2008, follows Sophie as she struggles to reconcile her conservative lifestyle with her newly inherited business – one that she was happily unaware of until her husband’s death.

At first reluctant to delve into the world of pornography, Sophie eventually has a change of heart after meeting a male porn star.

Other hit French television shows have recently attracted passionate followings across the pond, including police drama “Engrenages” (“Spiral”), the supernatural-themed “Les Revenants” (“The Returned”) and the World War II-set “Un Village Français”.
