Karl Lagerfeld unveiled a light, sporty collection at the Chanel couture show in Paris on Tuesday, while collections by Stéphane Rolland, Alexandre Vauthier and Bouchra Jarrar were also among the day’s highlights.

Held at the Grand Palais as usual, Lagerfeld staged the Chanel couture show against the backdrop of an elaborate, shimmering white set, complete with two giant sweeping staircases for his models to prance down. The stage, which was in stark contrast with last season when he transformed the venue into the ruins of a theatre, was meant to evoke a "nightclub in another galaxy," Lagerfeld said.

Each of his designs, which featured corseted waistlines as well as occasional knee and elbow pads, were accentuated by a pair of couture trainers, giving the collection a fun, airy feel.

Stéphane Rolland

Meanwhile, French designer Stéphane Rolland’s show at the Théâtre National de Chaillot featured a minimalist collection that experimented with different forms. Many of the pieces had an asymmetrical, almost sculptural look.

Bouchra Jarrar

A newcomer to haute couture, the label Bouchra Jarrar set itself apart with a collection that featured a number of elegant trousers and played with different textures such as English flannel, patent leather, feathers and suede.

Alexandre Vauthier

Lastly, Alexandre Vauthier’s collection consisted mostly of dresses in a variety of bold colours, including deep reds, black, inky blues and leopard print. Many of the pieces featured plunging necklines, while others had elaborate bodices made of tulle.
