Brokeback Mountain - the opera - premières in Madrid

Annie Proulx's tale of forbidden love between two Wyoming cowboys has already become an Oscar-winning film, and now it’s getting the operatic treatment. On the day that it premières at Madrid's Opera Real, we hear from Proulx on why she wrote the libretto, and how she thinks her story lends itself well to the medium.

Sticking with the classical theme, we’re discovering an American take on European opera with Ryan Brown, founder and conductor of the US-based Opera Lafayette. He tells Catherine Nicholson about the artistic coincidences behind why his company is playing Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte and Philidor’s Les Femmes Vengées back-to-back in two marathon musical sessions with the same singers and musicians.

Also on the show: we discover how Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour is planning to bring peace to Central African Republic; and we find out how French horse theatre from Bartabas, and Chinese musical virtuosity from pianist Wu Mu Ye formed part of a massive celebration of 50 years of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations.
